The Truth About TV Wall Mounting

Safety, Fixings & Costs.

Wall-mounting a TV sounds simple - a bracket, a few screws, job done... right?

Not quite. It's one of the most common jobs customers attempt themselves before calling for help, but improper mounting can because wall or TV damage, or personal injury. Professional assistance ensures your safety and peace of mind.

Here's the truth about what's involved, how it's done safely, and what it typically costs.

It's Not Just About the Bracket - It's About the Wall Behind It

Every home is different, and so is every wall. Understanding your wall type helps you feel more confident in choosing the correct fixings and mounting method, ensuring safety and durability.

The most important part of TV wall mounting is understanding what you're fixing into:

  • Plasterboard/stud walls
Needs the correct fixings in the right place - ideally into studs, or specialist anchors designed for hollow walls.
  • Dot & dab plasterboard
Looks solid, but actually has gaps behind the board. Requires longer fixings and careful positioning.
  • Solid brick or block walls
Safe and strong, but only if appropriately drilled and using the correct plugs and bolts.
  • Thermalite / lightweight block walls
Very common and notoriously crumbly - requires specific fixings and a gentle approach to avoid blowouts.

If the wrong fixings are used, the bracket will come loose over time... sometimes catastrophically.

Screen Size and Weight Matter

A lightweight 32" TV is one thing - a modern 65" or 75" is another entirely.

Large and heavy TVs require:

  • a bracket rated for the size and weight
  • secure mounting points
  • reinforced fixings if the wall is weak
  • correct installation height to avoid tipping or strain

It's not just about holding the weight - it's about holding it safely.

Cable Management Is Not an Afterthought

A neat installation isn't just aesthetic - it's practical.

Common options include:

  • trunking (surface-mounted - neat and simple)
  • in-wall cable routing (only where safe and practical)
  • power relocation (when needed)
  • using existing sockets sensibly to avoid stretching leads

A tidy setup helps prevent trip hazards and protects your TV's connections.

Why DIY Often Goes Wrong

Here are the most common DIY mistakes I come across:

  • Using the screws that came with the TV instead of proper wall fixings
  • Guessing where studs are (and missing them!)
  • Mounting too high or too low
  • Over-tightening bolts and crushing plasterboard
  • Not checking for hidden pipes or wires
  • Not levelling properly
  • Using the wrong drill bit for the wall material

Most DIY issues can be fixed - but some leave permanent damage or require more involved repair.

What It Typically Costs

Every installation is different, but these are realistic guide prices:

  • Standard wall mounting: from £90 - £160 (depends on bracket type and wall)
  • Large/heavy TVs: from £160 - £200
  • Cable trunking: small additional cost, factor an extra hour for a small run
  • In-wall cabling: depends on wall type and complexity, budget at least 2 extra hours
  • Brackets: can be supplied or fitted if you already have your own

I always provide an estimate based on the TV size, wall type, and any requested cable management - and I'll always discuss the safest option first.

What You Get with a Professional Installation

Choosing a professional means:

  • Correct fixings for your exact wall type
  • Safe, level and secure installation
  • Knowledge of stud walls, plasterboard, brick and block
  • Advice on mounting height and viewing angles
  • Clean, tidy work and minimal disruption
  • Peace of mind that it won't fall off the wall

And of course, full insurance and risk-assessed work as standard.

The Bottom Line

TV wall mounting isn't just a simple DIY job - it's a safety-critical installation that depends on the correct fixings, the right tools, and the proper understanding of the wall behind your screen.

Done correctly, it gives you a clean, modern setup that looks great and lasts for years.

Poorly done, it can lead to damaged walls, bent brackets, or a broken TV.
